Nikon FF Mirrorless Camera Rumored for CP+ 2018 Show

Previously rumored Nikon FF mirrorless camera is rumored to be announced in late February prior to CP+ 2018 Show in Japan.

As you might remember that the company is working on a new mirrorless camera concept. There will be two units in prgress that are two different sensor resolution. One of them based on the DX-format APS-c image sensor which is expected to be the 20.1MP resolution sensor found in the Nikon D500. The other one will be based on full-frame sensor which is claimed to feature the 45-megapixels from the D850 DSLR.

According to Thom Hogan’s predictions, the long awaited Nikon full frame mirrorless camera could be announced at CP+ Show in Japan. This year the event begins in the beginning of March, so an announcement in late February makes sense.

From Thom Hogan :

Still, we’re close. At least at the camera level. I expect Nikon to announce their new mirrorless system at CP+, which for 2018 begins with the month of March. I expect Nikon to have both DX and FX mirrorless options by the time Photokina rolls around next fall.

Below are the expectations from the Nikon full frame mirrorless camera we’ve posted earlier :

  • Nikon will announce both Nikon DX mirrorless camera and Nikon full frame mirrorless camera in 2018
  • New Nikon mirrorless mount
  • New Nikon mirrorless lens coming along with Nikon mirrorless cameras
  • The Nikon DX mirrorless camera could use 21MP Nikon D500 image sensor, the Nikon full frame mirrorless camera could use 45.7MP Nikon D850 image sensor.
  • Nikon will design a new F-mount to mirrorless mount adapter.
  • Nikon is is putting a lot of effort, research and money is the viewfinder.

2018 is the year for a possible Nikon full frame mirrorless camera announcement. Stay tuned with us for more information.

Don’t want to start over. The new mirrorless camera must have an adaptor so I can continue to use my current and expensive lens on them.

Dave Haynie

Of course the would have an adapter — look at Canon’s mirrorless, the EOS-M. It works with an adapter, but there are only a handful of native lenses, and those won’t fit your EOS DSLR. So not much love for the EOS M… you can already get a Canon EF or Nikon F adapter for any mirrorless… heck, you can get a passive adapter to fit Nikon F lenses on Canon EOS bodies.

Tony Psaltis

A little late for Nikon to jump in the game. Others great camera companies are leading the pack. Fuji, Olympus,SONY and all the 4/3 vendors. I suspect both Canon and Nikon will have a tough go at this.

Maria

And Nikon will kick all their asses. Especially with all their legacy glass. How long will it take to get the basic lenses out? I bet three lenses will be introduced along with their mirrorless cams. When they announce, Nikon will already be ahead of all of them. Figuratively speaking ?

Dave Haynie

All that legacy glass wouldn’t fit the rumored camera any better than it fits already-existing mirrorless cameras from different companies. Adapters already let you put F glass on Olympus, Fujifilm, Sony, Panasonic, etc…. their new thing would have no advantage to these others. Sure, they could make two versions of every lens, but they’re still playing catch-up with the other companies’ native glass, and they would be slow about it, because that’s a huge amount of money to invest before they’ve sold a single camera.

Nikon’s smart move would be to keep the F-Mount and build a hybrid DSLR/Mirrorless camera. EIther way, it’s great tech-theater.
