Tamron has officially announced the Tamron 25-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075) for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens expands the wide end to 25mm while keeping a 200mm telephoto reach and will be available November 20, 2025 at a U.S. retail price of $899.
The G2 is a successor to the existing 28-200mm F2.8-5.6, updated to go significantly wider at the wide end of its zoom. The 8x range means that, even with the expansion at the wide end, it doesn’t count as a superzoom, but combined with a relatively bright F2.8-5.6 maximum aperture range it gives a very flexible lens.
Key features
- Mount: Sony E-mount (full-frame FE)
- Focal length: 25–200mm (8× zoom)
- Aperture: f/2.8–5.6
- Optical design: 18 elements in 14 groups with special elements and BBAR‑G2 coating to suppress aberrations, flare, and ghosting
- Aperture blades: 9 (rounded) for smoother bokeh
- Autofocus: VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme‑torque Drive) linear motor for fast, accurate, and quiet AF; improved subject tracking over the previous model
- Close‑focus/magnification: notable close‑up performance with high magnification (Tamron cites a 1:1.9 ratio at the wide end) and minimum focus distance of ~0.16 m at 25mm
- Filters: 67mm front thread (unified filter size across the lens)
- Size & weight: compact and travel‑friendly — Tamron lists dimensions and weight emphasizing portability (lightweight compared with many fast zooms)
- Build: moisture‑resistant construction, fluorine front coating, improved grip and control layout; compatible with Tamron Lens Utility for firmware updates and customization

Who it’s for
The 25‑200mm G2 targets photographers who want a single, flexible zoom that covers wide-angle to medium telephoto without frequent lens changes: travel shooters, walkaround photographers, content creators, and hybrid shooters who need usable AF for both stills and video. The expanded 25mm wide end adds creative framing options over the previous 28mm design, while the VXD drive and optical refinements aim to close the gap with higher‑end zooms in AF speed and image quality.
How it compares
Compared with the earlier 28‑200mm Tamron, the G2 adds wider coverage, updated optics/coatings, and a VXD focus system tuned for faster performance. Against competing all‑in‑one zooms (including recent Sigma designs), the Tamron aims to stand out on overall image quality, close‑focus performance, and a compact balance of features at an $899 price.
Bottom line
The Tamron 25‑200mm F/2.8‑5.6 Di III VXD G2 (Model A075) is a compelling evolution of Tamron’s all‑in‑one lineup: wider at the short end, better close‑up and AF performance, and thoughtful ergonomic refinements, all at a sub‑$1,000 price point. With shipping beginning November 20, 2025, Sony E‑mount shooters seeking a single, versatile travel zoom now have a strong new option.
