Canon Patent for RF 135mm f/1.8L USM Prime Lens

Canon has filed a new patent in Japan. The application is for RF 135mm f/1.8L USM lens designed for Canon full frame mirrorless camera system. This lens will likely be the one rumored in early 2019 and one of the two 135mm fast primes.

Canon is expanding the RF series lens lineup and will introduce more glass for the full-frame mirrorless system. For the two 135mm fast primes, the RF 135mm f/1.4L USM and RF 135mm f/1.8L USM lenses are in development.

Both telephoto prime glasses are expected to arrive sometime in 2020. The RF 135mm f/1.4L lens would be another “crazy” prime lens just like the wide-angle zoom Canon RF 14-21mm f/1.4L USM Lens. Release date for these lenses is in later 2020.

Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L USM embodiment:

  • Focal length: 133.0mm
  • F number: 1.80
  • Half angle of view: 9.2°
  • Image height: 21.6mm
  • Overall length of lens: 150mm
  • Backfocus: 18mm

EOS R ($2,299 at AmazonB&HAdoramais the first camera to feature the RF lens mount with a 12-pin connection, flange back distance of 20mm and a wide 54mm mount diameter enabling even greater flexibility in lens design. See Canon RF Lens Roadmap 2018-2021.
