Here is our expectation of the popular premium series compact, Ricoh GR III camera. The GR-series Ricoh is one of the most popular compact camera in the company’s lineup.
Undoubtedly, the professionals who need a second camera with great image quality in compact sizes, the APS-C sensor based model becomes ideal for their needs.
Ricoh has been rumored to introduce a new compact camera in late 2016. The device in question were a high-end model that would be the replacement of Ricoh GR II. There is no signal of a successor model from the beginning of 2017. In this post you’ll find what we expect from Ricoh GR III camera.
Our expectations about the Ricoh GR III camera
The rumor mill didn’t provide when will be the premium fixed-lens camera become official. As a result Ricoh GR III camera price and release date information remains unknown. First let’s remember the Ricoh GR II specs and details.
Ricoh GR II
The GR II comes packed with a 16.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with an 18.3mm f/2.8 lens that provides a full-frame equivalent of 28mm. The compact camera is powered by a GR Engine V processor and supports an autofocus system offering a 0.2-second AF speed. The ISO ranges between 100 and 25,600 along with a minimum focusing distance of 10 centimeters in macro mode. The fastest shutter speed, when using the maximum aperture of f/2.8, has been bumped to 1/25000s from 1/2000s, while the buffer supports 10 RAW frames using the 4fps continuous shooting mode.
Expectations for Ricoh GR III camera
Ricoh is rumored to announce a new premium compact camera which will be called the Ricoh GR III. Here are our thoughts and expectations for the GR III camera.
- 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor
- High Resolution EVF
- Better ISO performance
- Tilt screen
- Dustproof body (maybe weather sealed)
- Price around $700
We hope the Ricoh GR III camera will arrive in late 2018 at the Photokina event. Please feel free to relay your comments, or suggestions.

I wish for all your improvements, except the viewfinder, which will compromise the form factor. Weater sealing and 24 MP sensor are actually the real things needed there…
Ya, I agree. A viewfinder would be a bad addition. The best thing about the GR is that it’s small and light. If I didn’t care about size I’d go with an X100F. But being able to fit a camera in your pocket and take it everywhere is priceless, and the GR does that, the X100F does not.
Weather sealing would be a big plus too. The biggest issue in the past was the dust problem. They could release a new version with no other improvements, and as long as it had weather sealing I’d buy it.
I think a new WiFi app would be nice too, but not necessary. So far I haven’t found a good app from any company that I’ve tried (Ricoh/Pentax, Fuji, Canon, Olympus); they all suck in my opinion. I think if Ricoh came out with a good app that made it so you could transfer, crop, and edit all-in-one, that would be extremely useful for people who like posting their stuff on Instagram, Flickr, Facebook, etc.
Ricoh is very, very late with this. Many have been jumping ship to the Fuji X100F (which is a compromise from the form factor perspective). Fuji is also getting ready to drop the X80 early in the new year, which is almost certainly going to be a 24MP APS-C with otherwise similar specs to the X-E3. Maybe we’ll even get the new Bluetooth feature which brings with it less klugey geotagging.
I never did upgrade from the GR to the GR II because it wasn’t a very compelling upgrade. I’m holding out a bit longer, but if the X80 drops and Ricoh is still being quiet, I’m changing teams.
Ricoh, being so quiet is not good. Give us something to work with here.
Waiting for this camera feels like waiting for Godot. It defiantly has a cult following, but like all cults it is probably a small select bunch as it is such a left of field camera. I wonder does Ricoh AKA Pentax have other priorities. I hate to be a merchant of doom, but perhaps the complete lack of solid rumours is a sign that nothing this way comes. I hope I am wrong and 2018 brings us great joy. In the meantime I will carry on wearing out my present model as I bide my time.
Maybe Valve has bought Ricoh and they’ll no longer be releasing anything that ends in a 3.
Well, 2017 has gone and I doubt Ricoh GR III will ever come out. May be the company decided to bury this brand for good. Ricoh’s loss is Fuji’s gain as the only other compact camera competing in this segment is X70 which although quite good doesn’t have the same IQ as Ricoh. But if Fuji ups it’s game with X80, Ricoh will be buried in history books. Hopefully, their marketing and development teams will get their act together and not end up with another Kodak like story…. 🙁
