Here are the first reviews of the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens. The standart zoom glass is billed as the lightest and smallest f/2.8 standard zoom lens available for mirrorless systems.

You can find some excellent reviews which takes a look at the lens and the kind of performance and image quality you can expect from it in practice. The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 definitely has some stiff competition from the highly popular Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, but it also looks like quite a good performer in a very portable package. Normal-length zoom lens is designed for Sony Full Frame E-Mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 42mm – 105 equivalent focal length.

Beyond being the smallest and lightest standard zoom lens available for mirrorless cameras, the 28-70mm f/2.8 comes with a variety of great features, including:

  • Better edge-to-edge performance thanks to increased control of axial chromatic aberrations and sagittal coma aberrations
  • Dust- and splash-proof mount
  • Water- and oil-repellant front element
  • Short working distance of 2.8 inches (7.1 cm) at 28mm
  • Stepping motor that provides fast and quiet autofocus appropriate for both photo and video work
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm for smoother bokeh

Ultimately the Sigma 28-70 2.8 DG DN does what it sets out to do, by delivering a useful general purpose range with the benefit of a fast and constant f2.8 aperture that separates subjects from backgrounds with a pleasing blur. It does this without breaking the bank or your back, but then so does the Tamron 28-75 2.8, so do compare them closely – and I’ll be doing just that in a future update of my review of this lens at cameralabs.com, where you’ll also find reviews of most other general-purpose zooms. In the meantime, if you’re happy with wide coverage that starts at 28mm, the new Sigma provides a compelling alternative to bigger, heavier and more expensive zooms while maintaining decent results.
