Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS Lens Reviews

ePhotozine posted their full Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS Lens review. They gave the lens a 5/5 rating and an “editor’s choice” mention.

From their conclusion:

Some lenses just gel and just get on with the job, performing flawlessly and smoothly and not getting in the way of image-making. This is such a lens; what a beauty it is and what lovely results it delivers.

The extra 1mm compared to the existing 15-35mm lens should not be underestimated, as such a difference is much more significant in an ultra-wide than, say, the difference between a 100mm and 105mm lens would be. The loss of 1 stop of speed does mean a lighter, more compact lens that also costs significantly less. This makes a good choice for travel photography.

In summary, a superb offering from Canon and without doubt an ‘Editor’s Choice’.

Dustin Abbott published his review for this lens. Here are the pros and cons :

  • High grade of build
  • Reasonably compact and light
  • Professional grade of weather sealing
  • Goes to 14mm!
  • Retains ability to use screw-in filters
  • Image Stabilizer works effectively
  • Canon’s sharpest wide angle zoom yet
  • Beautiful color and great contrast (save at 35mm)
  • Chromatic aberrations well controlled
  • Good flare resistance
  • Good coma control
  • High level of magnification

  • Price hike from the EF version
  • Fully retracted position in the middle of the zoom range
  • Focus ring hard to find by feel
  • Mechanical vignette at 14mm
  • Heavy vignette through a lot of the range
  • Heavy distortion at 14mm

From CameraLabs verdict :

Indeed if you’re considering the 14-35 simply as a lighter and more affordable ultra-wide, there’s also the budget RF 16 f2.8 to weigh-up. Sure it’s in a completely different league, much more basic and relying on even stronger corrections, but at just $300, it’ll give you a taste of the exotic without the cost of the L-zooms.

Ultimately though it’s great to have the choice of three ultra-wide options in the native RF mount, and for many the range, build and positioning will place the 14-35 in the sweet-spot.
