First Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Lens Reviews

Here are the first Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 lens reviews published on the web. The Sony FE 28-60mm f4-5.6 is the new ultra-compact kit lens for the Sony A7C (AmazonB&HAdorama) camera. It’s being bundled with the new Sony A7C but will soon be available as a standalone purchase to fit any Sony mirrorless camera.

The FE 28-60mm is slated to be available on its own in early 2021 for $499 (B&HAdorama).  According to Nokishita, the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 will be avalible for preorder in Japan on December 18th and ship January 29th.

From DigitalCameraWorld Verdict :

The Sony FE 28-60mm f4-5.6 is a great kit lens not just for the Sony A7C but any full frame mirrorless Sony. The limited zoom range is a constant handicap, though, so you either accept going out with more limited focal range or you take another lens or two with you – which kind of defeats the object. But while the zoom range is a constant issue, the optical quality is not. This lens performs far better than we expected with great edge-to-edge sharpness.

From ThePhoBlographer conclusion :

I’m not even bothering writing a full likes and dislikes list. There’s nothing incredibly exciting about this lens. Sure, it’s collapsible. But we live in a world of small, high-quality prime lenses. Even for someone stepping up to their first camera, Sony should offer something a bit more substantial. It’s not a bad lens, but it’s hard to get excited about it. It feels like an afterthought.

You can see more images from the lens on Dustin Abbott website as well as a video review can be found below.

All told, this is an impressive little lens optically, and I have to confess that it exceeded my expectations on virtually every level.  I was not impressed with the 28-70mm at all, so I was very pleasantly surprised by the fairly premium optics in this cheap housing.  The price of the lens drops to $300 if purchased in kit with the a7C, and I suspect that after market forces work for a while we may see the price drop further (the 28-70 costs $200 in kit).  Normally I wouldn’t advise people to purchase the kit lens, but this really isn’t a bad little compact option.
