Nikon Firmware Update: What’s New in Z5II and Z50II Versions 1.02 & 1.03

Nikon has rolled out fresh firmware updates for its popular mirrorless cameras—the Z5II and Z50II. These updates bring a mix of performance enhancements, bug fixes, and improved integration with Nikon Imaging Cloud, making them essential for photographers seeking optimal functionality. Whether you’re a seasoned Nikon user or just getting started, updating your camera firmware ensures you’re working with the latest tools Nikon has to offer.

🔧 Z5II Firmware Update Version 1.02

The Z5II firmware version 1.02 introduces several refinements aimed at improving user experience and connectivity:

  • Enhanced Nikon Imaging Cloud Integration: Nikon has updated default messages and values related to the Imaging Cloud, making it easier to manage cloud-based features.
  • New Picture Control Method: Users can now add Picture Controls from Nikon Imaging Cloud using a simplified method.
  • Sensor Cleaning Default Changed: The default setting for image sensor cleaning is now set to “Clean at shutdown”. This change helps maintain sensor hygiene automatically, though users can adjust it via the Setup Menu.
  • SnapBridge Pairing Note: If your camera was previously paired with SnapBridge, you may need to re-pair it due to changes in the camera’s display name introduced in earlier firmware versions.

To install the update:

  1. Download the firmware file Z5_2_0102.bin.
  2. Copy it to a memory card formatted in the camera.
  3. Insert the card, navigate to Firmware version in the Setup Menu, and follow on-screen instructions.

  • Bug Fixes:
    • NEF (RAW) processing errors when using Lossless compression and Hi 2.0 ISO settings have been resolved.
    • Zoomed-in playback of RAW images now displays correctly.
    • Video mode stability has been improved, fixing a freeze issue during specific operations.
    • USB charging is now functional with EN-EL25a batteries.
  • Previous Enhancements: Earlier updates added Pre-Release Capture support with SmallRig SR-RG2 and expanded language options for Middle East users.

To update:

  1. Download Z50_2_0103.bin.
  2. Transfer it to a formatted memory card.
  3. Insert the card, access Firmware version in the Setup Menu, and proceed with the update.

⚠️ Important Update Tips

  • Only use Z-mount NIKKOR lenses or FTZ II/FTZ adapters during the update process to avoid malfunctions.
  • Always check your current firmware version before updating to avoid unnecessary installation.
  • After updating, verify that the firmware version has changed successfully via the Setup Menu.

📝 Why These Updates Matter

Firmware updates are more than just technical tweaks—they’re Nikon’s way of refining your camera’s performance based on user feedback and evolving technology.
