Filmed in 8K: Canon EOS R5 Overheating in 15 Minutes!

The Canon EOS R5 has completely dominated camera news in 2020 with its impressive specs: 8K/30 video, 4K/120 slow-motion and 45-megapixel stills.

Even the Canon EOS R5 (Amazon, B&H, Adorama) is truly remarkable, but it will have the overheating problems when recording 8K and 4K videos. Canon already issued a statement about the details regarding Canon EOS R5/EOS R6 overheating during video recording, and has taken several steps to manage the potential  overheating issue.

Tony Northrup tested the the video recording limits (caused by overheating) of the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6, and re-tested the Fujifilm XT4. He tested the cameras with each different video setting: 4k/60, 4k/30 HQ, 4k/30 standard, 8k/30, and 8k/30 raw.

I tested them both indoors and outdoors, for about 3 tests in each different situation with each different video setting: 4k/60, 4k/30 HQ, 4k/30 standard, 8k/30, and 8k/30 raw (which was limited to 30 second recordings because of a problem with my CFExpress card).

Note that after I uploaded this video, I did hybrid stills/video shooting with the R5 and found that even shooting stills and short 15-30 second video clips (outside in 85F weather) caused my R5 to overheat. The overheating problem does see to be pretty serious, but in this video I provide some useful tips for overcoming it.

My experience editing and publishing an 8K video: Editing in Final Cut Pro on a Macbook Pro (2019 15″) was fine, shockingly, even undocked from my eGPU. But rendering was a nightmare. This 20 minute video took about 8 HOURS to render. After uploading, it took YouTube about 4.5 hours to make it available in 8K/60. Now, I can’t even watch it back in full 8k because my computer CHOKES. But it looks good in 4k, I guess.
