Sigma Patent for 12mm f/1.4 MFT Lens

Sigma has filed a new patent in Japan. The new patent refers to a bright 12mm f/1.4 prime lens designed for Micro Four Thirds cameras.

We can say that the company has recently increased its interest in Micro 4/3rds system. They have already filed 8mm f/1.8 Fisheye MFT lens last year.

From the patent application we can say that the optical formula of the lens is exactly same as the Panasonic LUMIX G LEICA DG SUMMILUX Lens, 12mm, F1.4 ASPH.. If becomes available in the market the optic will provide 24mm focal length in terms of 35mm format. See below for more details.

Sigma currently has four DN-series lenses for mirrorless cameras. They are Sigma 19mm f/2.8, 30mm f/1.4, 30mm f/2.8, and 60mm f/2.8 lenses.

A bright ultra wide-angle prime such as Sigma 12mm f/1.4 will be great for users of Micro Four Thirds system. However we have to underline that this is only the patent application. So don’t expect the product become available on the market in the near future.
