Lensbaby Announces Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens

Lensbaby has announced the Velvet 56, a new portrait lens with a 56mm focal length, maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2 and maximum aperture of f/1.6.

Lensbaby claims the lens produces ‘soft, glowing’ effects at brighter apertures for a ‘velvety’ quality the lens is named for. Velvet 56 enables photographers to move seamlessly from shooting an environmental portrait to capturing details in a subject’s clothing or jewelry.

Availability will start on April 13 with Canon, Nikon, Sony A, and Pentax mounts; the mirrorless mounts, such as Micro Four Thirds and Samsung NX, will be available sometime in early May. The regular black Velvet 56 will be priced at $499.95/£419, and the Velvet SE variant will be priced at $599.95/£499.
