Imaging Resource Review: An ultra-portable but somewhat pricey powerhouse pocket camera.

Overall, the Sony RX100 IV is an amazing feat of engineering and design. The amount of horsepower this little pocket cam offers is simply impressive. As with its predecessors, the image quality of the RX100 IV is very good, and a big step up compared to your average, small-sensored point-and-shoot. Its fast burst shooting capabilities and deep buffers make it easy to capture fast-paced action. And while it still uses just contrast-detect AF, the RX100 IV did surprisingly well with continuous AF performance and low-light AF. For video creators, the RX100 IV offers a host of significant improvements, including 4K, higher frame rates for full HD video plus awesome super-slow-mo video. Overall, with tons of performance and the excellent image quality we’ve come to expect, the Sony RX100 IV is quick, nimble and capable, though quite the pricey offering for a compact camera. Best of all, nevertheless, it simply slides back into your pocket when you’re done!

From Photographyblog review :

Hopefully the asking price of the RX100 IV will drop fairly quickly. At the moment it represents quite a big investment – but on the other hand that means there are some good deals to be had on its predecessors, all of which are still great cameras. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV makes for a very appealing back-up camera for everybody who craves high quality images even when they don’t have the ability or inclination to carry around heavy and cumbersome kit. It performs well in all areas, with excellent images in a variety of different shooting conditions. The fact that you can slip it into your pocket to carry with you at all times is likely to have a positive impact on your photography too.

PetaPixel says the Sony’s RX100 IV is One of the Best High-End Compacts Money Can Buy.

With the still photography side of the camera pretty much the same as the RX100 III, the Mark 4 seems to be aimed much more at the videographer. If you are primarily a photographer and are wondering if you should upgrade from III to IV, I would probably advise not. If you are looking to get into video and want a good quality compact, then it’s a lot easier to recommend. However the biggest problem with this camera is one I have not mentioned yet. The price. High-end compacts are most commonly used as backups for larger, more capable and more expensive cameras but with this camera retailing for $1,000, it’s more expensive than a larger-sensored, more-versatile entry-level DSLR. Videographers might still opt for the RX100 IV in that kind of comparison, but for stills the RX100 IV would not compete.

If money is no object and you will make use of the video features, the RX100 IV is the best high-end compact around.
